Default combo box list without selection bar

I have several successful bound combo boxes, all set to automatically drop
down when On Focus. Most combo boxes open nicely with the selection bar
highlighting the first value and I can then use the down arrow key to make a
selection and tab to the next control. However, some Combo boxes do not allow
the down or up arrow keys on entering a new record. The combo box list drops
down, but there is no selection bar visible in the list. If I do try the
arrow key, the first item is selected and focus goes to the next control on
the form. All combo boxes appear to have exactly the same properties. The
combo boxes which do not have a selection bar in it, will have it appear if
after a selection is made and I go back to edit it. Appreciate your advice.
