Default sumif based on 1 criteria

cannot quite figure this out,
Cells a3:a1000 have respectively numbers 1-997
Cells f3:f1000 has text containing either of 4 types
(signed)(unsigned)(committed)(uncommitted)

lets say my name is jim and that name is in cell a492 and in cell f492 is
committed, i want to find how many people are above me that are committed.

is it a =sumif or another formula
