Copy text in Word = OLE_LINKx Bookmark

Hi there,

I know that this question has been asked before, but unfortunately I could
not find a satisfying answer anywhere on net (google, newsgroups, ms kb)...

My system:
Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 : Service Pack
2) Excel 2003 (11.6355.6360) SP1 - English
Word 2003 (11.6502.6360) SP1 - English

Word Add-Ins:
Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional
Some self-written Add-Ins

Situation: New document
I type some text and wantt to copy some of the text so I chose the copy
command.

Result:
The highlighted text has now become a bookmark with the name OLE_LINKx (x
signifies a number that is always increasing by 1)

What I have tried so far:
Tried to run Word without any Addins - still does it
Starting Word in virgin state (winword.exe /a) - still does it
Search everywhere on the internet - no luck

I would be very greatful for some help on this issue...

I know this is not a make or break issue but I have 1500 PC's that behave
that way which is very annoying.

Hi there,

After a lot of trial and error I found the source of the problem.

In our company we use the Software PowerDocs from Hummingbird which is
integrated with MS-Office (it intercepts the save command so that you can
save the document in the Document Management Software instead of the normal
file system). If the PowerDocs.exe file is killed in the Task Manager the
problem (OLE_LINKx bookmarks) goes away.

Now we just have to find out how we can run PowerDocs without having the
whole bookmark mess...

Hi Tito,

That's really interesting....a few other people have reported random OLE
bookmark creation but no one has suggested a cause, that I remember. This
might be something Hummingbird has to fix, be sure to report it as well as
sending feedback to MS.

On my Mac, I've got an apparently unrelated add-in that does the same
thing--bookmarks everything I copy. I work around it with a macro that
deletes all OLE bookmarks. This is probably not a feasible solution for a
company with 1500 machines that might be using OLE bookmarks for real
purposes, but here's the macro, just in case it gives you some ideas:

Thanks for your feedback:

1. Will try to get the message to Microsoft or to a Word MVP...

2. I already have that macro but considering that we have created 100's of
thousands of documents containing OLE_LINKSx bookmarks it is not really
feasible to use it on such a large scale. Also user education for such an
issue is a nightmare. I figure, no one has really noticed until now and it
does not break the documents, therefore I will do nothing right now until we
have a solution and only send the macro to those users who request it.
