So I will remove this *dastardly* IE8 program and see how it goes.

Make sure you disable all those real-time protections prior to uninstalling
IE8 or you may be looking at another "wipe & reload."

Heather wrote:
Hi PA......yes, I made the grave error of installing IE8 again and no I
didn't disable anything!! It was a Windows Update install.

The CD was the same 5 year old one that Willy originally installed XP on
here with, so had to update a lot of stuff. He hadn't quite gotten all
the
MS updates, but did put SP3 on.

As for using Norton or McAfee.......bite your tongue!! You know I know
better, grin. Hate them both due to being a WinME user. I have Avast on
here.

I do believe I compacted them but probably some of the ones on the
Clickfree
gadget might not have been done. Compact All Folders started working
about
a week before the reformat. And YES.....that was the problem before.

So I will remove this *dastardly* IE8 program and see how it goes. Thanks

Did you happen to install IE8 again? Did you disable all real-time
protections afforded by your (1) anti-virus application, (2) any
anti-spyware applications, (3) disable any third-party firewall (and then
enable the Windows Firewall) prior to installing IE8?

Assuming either the CDs that same with the computer or the hidden Recover
partition was used to reinstall Windows, was a Norton or McAfee
free-trial
reinstalled (which would NOT have been valid)?

Also, I thought the new Clickfree backup would reinstall all of my *.dbx
files into OE with no problem, but such is not the case.

I wouldn't depend on any such program to backup *and* "reinstall" OE
data.
There's no way that the {GUID} associated with your new/current identity
(after the reinstall) is identical to the {GUID} associated with your
pre-reinstall identity. (And I'd hope that your Inbox, Sent Items, and
Deleted Items folders were empty and that you'd compacted all OE folders
prior to backing up the old data.)

If you have "orphaned" DBX files, you may be able to import them. See...

Big kissies to PA and Bruce!! I have my IE7 back and more importantly, my
ability to open dirty joke pictures in OE........LOL!! One good thing MS
does is uninstall properly.....so far.

Just removed that *blast-ard* IE8 program and wonder why in hell MS put it
out there. I only run SpywareBlaster......no other antimalware stuff that
isn't on demand. MBAM is on here too and I run it every week.

I do have Windows Live Essentials, Live Sign-in Assistant & Live Upload on
here......should I also remove any of those?? I believe that the first is a
chat update for MSN or some such and I just don't use that stuff.

Huge thanks to you both.......that was really ticking me off. I think the
fact that I let the computer guy talk me into putting it on here was REALLY
ticking me off. It was supposed to make the print bigger on the
programs.....didn't do that at all.

Welllllllll?? No, I didn't, but just checked Spyware Blaster and the FF
protection was partly down, so re-enabled it. That was happening often
prior to the reformat once I had IE8 on here and had disabled Spybot.

The uninstall gave me a list of things installed after it and they were HP
printer and camera stuff, MusicMatch and Limewire. I will check each of
them out. Easy to reinstall.

YW. I think IE8 was designed more for Win 7 than XP or Vista. Hopefully it
will work there reasonably well.

LOL!! I used WinMX for eons.....but was having a problem with it. I rarely
download songs, but it is still legal here in the Great White North. ISP's
won't give up names apparently.

And yes, these P2P programs are full of viruses and malware, but I only
allow mp3's to be downloaded and run my antivirus & MBAM over them before
opening. I don't really like Limewire for some "gut hunch" reason and may
just uninstall it. WinMX was really good until the Merkins made the author
stop. Believe he was Canadian.

Can I have some soup now?? (VBG)
