Printing from Word
"Peter" wrote: Let me add the following: I have no trouble printing at the 98SE. I have no trouble printing a test page from the printer's software, from the remote XP I have no trouble printing a net page from the XP I HAVE trouble printing from Word 2002. This seems to me that the problem lies with Word. I have looked at the activity in my Kerio firewall, and when I give the order to print it seems to connect out to ports 139 and 445. In my ignorance of all these matters, it appears that it is looking at both ports to see which is available. However when I try to print from Word it seems to dwell on port 445, and if that is the case, then the information below seems to apply. How do I resolve the problem? Within Windows? Or maybe by unbinding file and printersharing from TCPIP . If I do that I am afraid I might upset the rest of the home network (2 machines) which is working fine on file sharing and printing for anything other than Word. Let me just finish by saying that I DID manage to print for the last two years (with many hiccupos) until I installed ServicePack 2. And I have also managed to print from Word recently, but not today! Any help much appreciated. "Peter" escreveu na mensagem ... I have had continuous problems printing from an XP to a printer connected to a 98SE. I recall some time ago Suzzanne ´Barnhill telling me that Word 2002 looks for a printer when it loads. Now I found something on the net that may address the problem. Even though this may be a networking problem, I would like to know what Word http://groups.google.pt/groups?hl=pt...ing.google.com ...since Win2000 and also in WinXP, when windows networking is bound toTCPIP, the system tries a network connection to remote IP port 445, andonly if this fails, uses ports 137 to 139. As Win98 and WinME don't havea port 445 open (and would not know how to handle those incoming networkpackets to port 445), WinXP keeps trying for some time or number ofattempts. (I'd like to know where this is defined, because after updatewith SP2, this takes forever.)During these attempts, the printing process seems to be frozen. So your problem may very well go away if you unbind file and printersharing from TCPIP on the WinXP machine. I would like to know whether has to say about it before I go about changing all my settings! |
