Default Cross Reference not updating correctly (text is truncated)

I have a cross-reference that doesn't update unless you make the new text of
the header the same length or less than the original. If you make it shorter
then the next change you make has to result in a string that size or less. I
would like to also add that it isn't that it does't seem to perform the
update it just seems to truncate the text to current length of the xref.

For Example:

Your Header:
Test Header

It is 11 characters long.

You change it to:
"Test Header 1" which is 13 characters long.

Your cross-reference will not change.

Now after typing this up I did some checking with my document. I determined
that this only happens when adding text on to the end of the header. This
seems to correspond with another issue with word I know of which is the
difference between hitting enter at the end of a paragaraph vs. the
beginning of the next paragraph. Does anybody concur with my findings? Does
anyone know of a way to extend the text of a heading and not have to re-do
all of the cross references?

Any thoughts?

You're talking about Headings rather than Headers (I hope), quite
different things in Word. Are your headings maybe inside Field
brackets, and when you add stuff, you're adding it outside the
brackets? (I don't know why they would be, but that's what might
happen if they were.)

Hit the Show Non-Printing Characters button to see your field codes.
