Default Copy calculation formula to new cells - has gone

I am preparing some budget reports. I am able to use the auto sum key to add a line of figures, but when I try to copy this formula to all rows, it carries forward the same total, not creating individual totals. I have never had any problems before with this. Is this a virus problem? Is there a toggle switch that has been turned on without my knowledge? Im stumped.
Thanks

Look at the formula and see if there are any absolute signs in it ($) ie
=sum($A$1:$A$21)

Select the cell with the formula. Put the mouse on the bottom right corner
of that cell. The mouse icon will turn into a + symbol, click on that, and
select all the cells below where you want to have sums.
