Default word hangs on formatting a large number of rows

When a large number of rows in a column is being selected, word sometimes
gets lost and select other columns as well. When this happens, applying
"format copy" or "bullet/number" style will hang word

even if only the target column is selected for a sufficiently large number
of rows, word hangs also.

Apparently large number of rows can be as little as a bit over a page!

What version of Word. Does the table have merged or split cells? Are there
any nested tables? Is the table the result of joining other tables? With a
little more information, someone may be able to help.

office 2003
the document can start with a template and copy and paste from another
document and reformat when needed

So the problematic document may have copy section of similar table format
form another document or just something from another document

as far as I know there is not nested tables, nor merged not split cells.
