OE .bak files appeared in trash
This new Dell with WinXP Pro/IE6/OE6 is giving me fits {whereas my older
Dell with Win2000/IE6/OE6 never misses a beat}. Today, I noticed trash in my Desktop Trash Folder. I looked, and it contained several .bak files from OE6 - folders.bak, offline bak, Pop3uidl.bak and 8 various Newsgroup .bak files. To my knowledge, I never deleted any of these {the delete dates were two days ago}. Next, I went to Windows Explorer and noticed under 'Identities,' there were four of those very long numbered folders, each containing Outlook Express subfolders. Two of them contained all my usual store of folders. The other two contained 4-6 of the usual essential folders, all nearly empty. Under 'Manage Identities' in OE, I have two Identities listed: 'Main Identity' and 'James' - earlier on, I encountered a corrupted identity {button bar disappeared} and through this NG, I learned how to generate a new Identity. That's why there are two Identities. I don't know what to make of the appearance of the 11 .bak files that suddenly appeared in my Desktop Trash Folder - and the 4 'Identities' observed in in my Windows Explorer Identities folder. {Two of these four Identities appear abnormal - very few stored folders contained in them}. As I write this, my OE seems to be functioning OK. Should I do nothing - or what? Thanks - james |

OE .bak files appeared in trash
This is due to the OE update, (KB923694). Now when you compact, a copy of
your dbx files are sent to the Recycle Bin in the event that something should go wrong and messages, or entire folders, are lost when you are compacting. Many people do not back up Outlook Express on a regular basis. This new mandatory backup is something people have been asking for quite awhile as we spend a lot of time helping people getting their messages back, and they have to purchase a tool to recover messages. You can empty the Recycle Bin any time you want and the bak files will go away until you compact again. For more info, see the information outlined in red he www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 If you don't currently back up OE regularly, I would suggest you get this, or a similar tool, (freeware): This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program. Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB): http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx As far as the extra identities, Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. This will show you the identities currently in use and you can delete the ones not in use. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "James" wrote in message ... Thank you Bruce. Again, I do appreciate you quick replies. Yes, on
5/21/07, I updated with KB923694. Going to Tools/Options/Maint/Store Folder revealed which numbered folder went to the 'James' identity I'm currently using. That, I needed to know. I went back to Windows Explorer and deleted the orphan identities. Now, there remains only two - one for James and one for Main Identity. I may later delete on of these, now that I know which is which. Thanks - james "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... This is due to the OE update, (KB923694). Simply remember to empty the Recycle Bin before you compact OE folders,
James. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org James wrote: This new Dell with WinXP Pro/IE6/OE6 is giving me fits {whereas my older Dell with Win2000/IE6/OE6 never misses a beat}.
