Why are the headers acting like they're linked?

Word 2003 - We have a document with 5 sections. (section break, next page)
There is a header in section 1. Then, no headers until section 4. 'Link to previous' is turned off everywhere.

The header in section 4 is for an appendix so the page number line will read Page A (dash) then the page number is inserted. The rest of the header is the same as in section 1 but no A on the page number line.

So here's what happening: user typed in the second header. First header added the 'A'. If user takes the 'A' out, it takes it out of the second header.

I can't see why these two headers should be linked. Short of using white-out, what's a person to do? Any assistance would be, as usual, greatly appreciated.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1. 'Same as previous' is turned off in the footers, but not in the headers.

2. Each section is set up with 'different first page' headers/footers,
and 'same as previous' is turned off in the main part of each section,
but not on the first page (or maybe 'same as previous' is turned off in
the first-page footer, but not in the first-page header).

Actually, we checked all your suggestions before I put this out on the board. The problem corrected itself. I think the user's PC is haunted because we've had other problems that have 'fixed' themselves. I'm going to have the IT folks check it out. Thanks.

Have you considered that the user may be the problem? It's not unheard of
for a user to report having conducted certain tests that have not, in fact,
been conducted or performing certain actions that have been omitted. g
