Default help!! How do I block emails?

I need help!!! For some reason, all of a sudden lately, I am getting a ton
of spam emails. I have absolutely no idea why. I have cleaned out my temp
internet folder, I have AdAware that I have been running almost every day to
get rid of spyware, I have even set up some message rules to delete emails
with certain phrases and words in the subject line or message body. Why am
I getting all these emails suddenly? How do I stop it? I rarely, rarely
used to get any kind of spam emails before and now I get at least 20 a day.
And they are all different-refinance, prescription meds online, porn sites,
etc. How do I get rid of these?!?!? Its very annoying. Is there a free spam
program I can download from the internet? Please help!! Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!!!

Jane

Using your true address in a newsgroup is a sure way to start getting
a lot of Spam. And now the number will grow. They harvest the
addresses from groups like this. ToolsAccountsNewsProperties -
Enter a fictitious address.

Running AdAware and other like programs is a good idea, but they have
nothing to do with stopping Spam.

For Spam blockers, do a search. I don't use it, but I have heard good
things about K9 Spam Blocker: http://www.keir.net/k9.html

Default help!! How do I block emails?

You haven't concealed your address in this posting, and that suggests you
can expect to receive many more Spam messages, when the "address-harvesting"
"bots" distribute your address!

1. Right-click your name, on the "From" caption of your message, to which
I'm responding

2. Left-click "Properties" in the context ("pop-up") menu which appears.

3. The E-mail address will be displayed on the Properties display.

Also, if I'd not removed it from this reply, your address would be "in plain
view" here. (See the quotation of your original text, below my signature.)

If you've been posting messages at news groups recently, and if all your
postings revealed your address as the first message in this thread did, that
might explain the increased Spam which you've seen. You may have been
"distributing" and "publishing" your address, without knowing it.

Here's how to correct that problem:

1. In MSOE's Tools menu, left-click Accounts

2. Then, left-click the "News" tab on that "Internet Accounts" display,

3. In the display window of all the news accounts, left-click the account
for which address modification is desired (that will "select" that account),

4. Left-click the Properties button, which is on the right side of the
"Internet Accounts" tab.

5. On the "General" tab of the Properties display, it's possible to change
the "E-mail address" which is displayed, however is desired.

6. Then enter those changes by left-clicking the "OK" button at the bottom
of the tab.

When you check the Properties display of my address, you'll find only
nonsense. It might seem nice to include some "bogus" elements in the
address which you instruct MSOE to display for you in news group messages,
and then to compose a digital signature which tells readers how to alter
your "corrupted" address, so they can write to you. (You might, for
example, enter a "false" address, such as "JanieKeenan," and, in your
signature, you might say, "My name is 'Jane,' not 'Janie,' for direct
replies.") The assumption was always that the "bots" which "harvested"
addresses would be unable to use that information, would "harvest" the false
address, and therefore wouldn't invade your privacy. However, if *people*
are "harvesting" addresses, and not "software robots." you're out of luck,
aren't you? It seems best never to reveal your address in such forums as
this, even in a "coded" form.

In article , lid
says...

The spammers have obtained your email address from some public place. Stupid
jerks believe that it is theirs, if it is publicly visible. For posting in
news groups, such as this one, you really need to use an invalid address. It
just so happens that a TLD has been reserved which you can press into use
for this purpose. And I have modified this message to suggest one way to use
that reserved TLD; .

To change your posting email address, go to Tools Accounts News, and
select "Properties" for the account you wish to modify. Change the email
address to the new, invalid address. You can make your invalid address as
cute as you like; just be sure it ends with '.invalid'.

How do I stop it? I rarely, rarely used to get any kind of spam emails
before and now I get at least 20 a day. And they are all different-
refinance, prescription meds online, porn sites, etc. How do I get rid of
these?!?!? Its very annoying.

At this point there is nothing you can do to stop it. The spammers already
have your email address. It will go on forever...

Is there a free spam program I can download from the internet?

Two, at least. I have use POPFile, and others swear by K9:

K9:
http://keir.net/k9.html
POPFile: http://popfile.sourceforge.net/

They act as proxies between your POP3 server and MSOE. It takes about six
weeks, or so, to train; but after that you should see about 98% to 99%
success at trapping spam.
