Office 97 Setup Non-responsive
I attempted to install Office 97 on new computer with Vista OS and upgrade
with Office 2003 Upgrade. Both licensed software. I put in the Office 2003 CD and system asked for Office 97 CD which I inserted. The 2003 would not install (Set-up Non-Responsive) so I attempted to install Office 97 first. That partially installed before also going non-responsive. I tried a number of times to install to no avail. Finally I tried to uninstall/remove Office 97 (310MB) but consistently received a "Set-up Non-Responsive" on a number of attempts. Can anyone help? Thank you -- TOB |

You could initially try a restore point, if one was made, for prior to the
first installation attempt, then check whether the MS Office folders have been removed. If not, and as I guess its a new PC with little on it, recover to factory supplied condition, and start over. You did uninstall any Office trial edition & its activation assistant, that may have been preinstalled? "Elder" wrote in message ... Office 97 Setup Non-responsive
Hi,
Office 97 is not supported on Windows Vista so, even if you can instal it successfully, don't be surprised if it doesn't run properly. Office 2003 is fully supported, however. If Office 2003 is an upgrade from Office 97, the most you should neeed to do is to insert the Office 97 CD when prompted by the Office 2003 installer for the qualifying previous version. -- Cheers macropod [Microsoft MVP - Word] "Elder" wrote in message ... Thank you. Recovering to factory condition is probably the thing to do at
this point Please elaborate on the impact of removing/not removing the preinstalled MS Office. -- TOB "DL" wrote: You could initially try a restore point, if one was made, for prior to the first installation attempt, then check whether the MS Office folders have been removed. You have to uninstall any trial version & the activation assistant via the
add/remove dialogue prior to installing any office version from cd/dvd then reboot. If you have an upgrade version of Office 2003 you commence the installation with that cd, and when it complains about no earlier version found, you swap the cd with your earlier version, once verified, re swap cd & continue with the installation of 2003 "Elder" wrote in message ... Office 97 Setup Non-responsive
I'm not sure that Vista will run Office 97, and attempting to install that
product in the hopes that an upgrade to Office 2003 could then be installed is misguided. IF your version of Office 2003 is an Upgrade Edition, then I believe you're out of luck loading it onto your Vista machine. Office 2003 most certainly will run on Vista, that's fine. But I'm not sure that Vista will support Office 97. Vista does not know that your next move is to upgrade to Office 2003, so it assumes that your installation of Office 97 is the end of the line. If it does not like Office 97, it will not allow it to be loaded. I loaded Office 2003 onto my Vista machine, so there is no problem there. But, my Office is not an upgrade version. You may have backed yourself into a corner where you have to use REGEDIT to remove all instances of Office 97. If you do not know how to do this, you are in for some trouble because you can hose your Registry in a serious way. The Registry has a Search (Find and Find Next) feature that allows you to input search strings to find. Input a string such as MSOFFICE 97, and delete all instances that are found. This will wipe Office 97 and let you move on with another install. "Elder" wrote in message ... I attempted to install Office 97 on new computer with Vista OS and upgrade with Office 2003 Upgrade. Hmmm ... I've not tried that, but logic says that Vista would object to Office 97 and prevent this strategy from working out well. Of course, we are talking about Windows, and LOGIC is not always reliable in trying to figure stuff out. |

Also completely wrong, its never been neccessary to install the earlier
version first in order to install the upgrade version -Vista has no interaction with the earlier version cd when you swap cd's to veriphy "Jeff Strickland" wrote in message ...
