Align to baseliine...

Can one align text to a baseline in Word 2003. Especially useful in
columns setup.

Prior to rediscovering Word, I have been using page publishing programs
to produce my 2 to 3-page "epics". A lot of what I do is the text
cut-and-paste variety; certainly doable in page publishing programs but
hard to "automate".

Word 2003 seems to do most of what I want. Aligning text baselines in
3-column presentations is doable in some page design programs and
produces an aesthetically pleasing result. I'm almost there with Word,
but the text baselines between columns don't align and the result is,
well, less professional looking.

Not really a big deal in the scheme of things, but if it can be done,
I'd like to know how to do it in Word.

If line spacing and font size are consistent, then text across columns
should align. In general, all text (of any size) in a given paragraph aligns
at the baseline, but aligning side-by-side paragraphs of different font
sizes is difficult except in a table with vertical alignment set to Bottom.

By way of one example, if you set/use line spacing to At least....
and then use different font point sizes for certain things within the
paragraph...

I usually recommend use of the Exactly option/choice for line spacing
and also watch space before and after.

I suspect that my replacing of hard returns after paragraphs with space
after formating may have thrown off the text in adjacent columns.
By way of information, say I have 12-point text and a paragraph space
after setting of 6-points, wouldn't this "lift" th text in an adjacent
column by 6-points; hence causing my problem?

Another factor with Exactly line spacing is a Compatibility Options setting
that allows you to center or not center lines with Exact line height.

No, the Space After has no effect on the baseline.
