Default Text in WordArt box won't display except in Print Preview

At the beginning of a paragraph in Word 2003 (Student and Teachers ed.), I
have highlighted two words, then clicked on WordArt to have those words
displayed in WordArt box. The text does not display on the page, nor are
there grabable handles to resize the box containing the WordArt words.

However, the text in the WordArt box does display when I click on Print
Preview.

How do I get the text to display in the box and how do I get the handles so
that I can resize the box?

Your response is greatly appreciated.

Tools options view - check drawings - uncheck picture place holders.
