A "new PC". XO or Vista?

If XP:

Description of how the Attachment Manager works in Windows XP Service Pack2:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883260

If that does not help, what it the file extension of the attachments? If
they are indeed Word attachments:

Save the attachment to your HDD. Right click on it and Open With | Choose
Program. Find and choose a program that works. (Word?), and then check the
box: Always use this program to open this kind of file. This should enable
you to open these attachments in the future.

Can you see the attachment or is it unreadable?
What email program sent the email?
If they use Outlook and send as RTF, then OE does not recognize the
attachment.
The message should be sent as plain text.

Is he getting an error message?

Does the attachment open in the wrong program?

Is the problem only when he attempts to open the attachment from with
OE? Does it perhaps say that Windows doesn't know what program to use,
but if he saves the attachment, then double click it does it open OK?
