Default Subtotals

I get the following error message when I try to subtotal my list in Excel 2003. I have been using other versions of Excel for many year, and have never had this problem.

"The command could not be completed using the range specified. Select a single cell within the range and try the command again."

When I select a cell in the List, then the Subtotal feature is inactive. If a select a cell outside the list I get the message above.

Any ideas??

If you select a cell within a range of used cells, excel will try to guess what
should be subtotalled.

I'm afraid to let xl guess. I always select my bottomrightcell to my
topleftcell and then do data|subtotals.

(I do the same with sorting/pivottables/etc.)

And if you select a cell that's not in the any used range, xl won't know how to
even start guessing!

Hi Dave -

I wanted to thank you for your response. Unfortunately it is not doing the trick. I had already tried that. Although the "list" feature in the 2003 version does operate a little differently, it should still work with the selections that you have suggested and I have tried. I am wondering at this point if something is wrong with my installation or settings.

The following is a quote from the help files:

"Microsoft Excel can automatically calculate subtotal and grand total
values in a list (list: A series of rows that contains related data or
a series of rows that you designate to function as a datasheet by using
the Create List command.)."

But at the same time Excel clearly distinguishes Lists (XL2003) from
Ranges, since it has operations for switching from List to Range and
vice versa.

Selecting a cell in a List disables DataSubtotals...

I find it hard to reconcile these bits at the moment, much the same as
yourself.

Thanks for the clarification.

I don't use xl2003 and had forgotten that there is something really called a
List. (I was reading List as Range.)
