Is there some way to turn off a virus scan each time
Excel and Word open a document. I am running Norton Anti- Virus Professional

Eric,
Have you disabled Norton Office document scanner? Norton/Options/Miscellaneous/Enable Office Plug-in. This may resolve your issue.
