discounting price lists

please excuse my newbieness.

I have a price made up of about 500 items. I would like
to be able to enter a discount (ie 40%) and have excel
apply the discount to each item individually in a new
column beside the list price. I can do it by creating a
formula for each individual box (by typing in a box
=d8*a2) but this is too time consuming, I want to be able
to change the discount or multiplier amount at any time
and have every price change accordingly.

Hi Dan!

If your discount is in A2 use:

=D8*$A$2

When this is copied down the copy will always refer to your discount
cell

thanks norm, either I'm doinig something wrong or you
didn't understand what I was asking because when I tried
what you just recommended it didn't work for me. all it's
doing is displaying the formula in the cell that I entered
it into.

let me give a more precise example of what I'm trying to
do.

I have a number of "list prices" in a column lets say
column "A", rows 5-10 each have a different "list price".
Then I have a mark-up or discount amount ie x 1.4 in cell
A1, I want to be able to change the number in A1 to 1.5 or
1.6 or 1.7 or whatever and have every number in cloumn "A"
rows 5-10 change to the new amount together. without
going to each cell in each column and entering in a
formula for each. they are all diiferent prices, but they
all will have the same discount.

you'll have to forgive me, I used to have a spreadsheet
that did this perfectly that someone else made for me so I
just took it for granted until a virus wiped out my system
now I have no idea how it works lol.

Try putting the opposite of your "Discount" say .6 for 40% in an empty cell
and then doing Insert Name Define.............type Discount in the
little Name window and OK..........then assuming your prices are in column
A, put this in B1 and copy down.........=A1*Discount
