Default Can Send, But Can't Receive Email in Office 2000/2003

When I check Send/Receive mail in either Office 2000 or 2003, I receive the
following errors:

1 message(s) couldn't be retrieved from the server. This usually happens
when the connection to the server is lost due to server or network problems.
If the problem persists, contact your administrator.

The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server. Server
Response: '+OK 25196 octets'. (Account: 'myemail', POP3 Server:
'pop.earthlink.net', Error Number 0x800ccc0f).

I believe the problem began after I installed XP SP2 (which I have since
uninstalled). Yes, I have a firewall (ZAP) and AV (NAV), but I have disabled
both while testing, and I still produce the same errors above. I have logged
into my Earthlink account via web-based mail, and deleted all mail. I am able
to send an email, but when it arrives as received mail, the above error
message appear again. The sent email does, however, go to my Earthlink
web-based account. So it would appear to me that I am able to transmit email,
but cannot receive it within Office 2000 or 2003.

Any ideas what could be producing the above errors? I have reset my IP
address via IPCONFIG (I'm on a broadband connection), but that hasn't helped
either. I have also followed Earthlink's instructions for setting up an email
account within Office 2000 or 2003. I have also reproduced the same errors by
creating a new Earthlink email account. I would appreciate any suggestions or
someone pointing me to the appropriate log files that I could review to
isolate this problem.
