Default page numbering is off

I'm using office 2007 word, after inserting page number on a 20 page document
format is correct, page numbers are correct until page 6 which shows a 2 but
page 7 thru 20 are correct. I've tried editing change the 2 to a 6 then the
rest of the pages become page 6. I've disconnect the link on link previous
still will not work

As you have noticed, deselecting Link to Previous won't help with the page
number restarts.

Instead, do the following: Place the insertion point on the page where the
page number changes (that is, on the page where it displays "2" in this
case). Double-click the header to activate header/footer view. In the Header
& Footer Tools Design tab, click Page Number, and then click Format Page
Numbers. Under "Page numbering," select "Continue from previous section,"
and then click OK.
