Is it possible to add multiple contacts to a distribution list from an Excel
or Word format?

Default Adding multiple contacts from Exel format

No, not directly to a DL. You can only import data in those formats directly
into your Contacts Folder.
The closest you can come is to create a list of names and addresses in a
format that will permit you to paste them into the Select Members dialog:
