print shop question.

Booklet setup, horizontal page 8.5 x 11, 32 page booklet

The printer wants me to output the pdf not as a printer spread 'cause he
wants to paginate it with his software and print it 3 or 4 up. So he wants
me to set it up for 5.5 x 8.5 output to pdf one document containing all the
single pages.

When I'm finished with my layout (for sanity's sake I will continue to work
on it as a booklet until I'm ready for output), how should I reset the
document for him without frying it...or myself?

Do it exactly as your printer suggested. Work in reader spreads and leave
printer spreads to the printers. Always work in reader spreads unless you
have a very specific situation where that is not practical (like tri-fold
brochures). Make sure you use "high quality" settings in PDF Maker or
Distiller when making the PDF, make sure your bleeds are defined, print your
crop marks, add 1 inch to the height a width of the document to accommodate
the printer marks (or use 8.5 x 11 in this case).

Imagine me imposing my 100 page magazine into printer spreads and my printer
(RR Donnelley & Sons or Quad Graphics) having to call me and say it's all
messed up because they are in printer spreads and their imposition workflow
doesn't work that way so it's going to cost extra and delay the job.

Only do the "favors" your printer *tells* you to. Because then they aren't
favors, they are instructions. Never do favors (like imposition) for your
printer. Your printer won't see them as "favors" in terms of helping them.
They will see those kind of "favors" as dollar signs. It saves everyone
sanity and you dollars.

For now I want to work in printer spread so when I make up the dummy for him
I wont go insane. After I print the dummy, I'll switch to printer spread
then output to the PDF.

No bleeds inside, just the covers had one bleed which I already gave him.

Working with old Acrobat 4 and I only have PDF Writer as driver...dunno
exactly what happened to PDF Distiller, I used to have it but dunno where it
went. I am having font issues but I wont bore you with that right now :-) I
must have something set incorrectly in Acrobat though.

So..whats the best way in Pub to switch out of the mode I am in when it
comes time to give it to the printer? Set it for 8.5 x 11 Portrait with
crops??? Sheesh I better make a backup.

When working with Distiller 4 you need to make a PostScript file to a
device like "Scitex Brisque L2". For Distiller you'd have to let me know
which settings files you have installed. Something like "high quality" would
be good. Using "press quality" would be fine except that it converts
everything CMYK. Including the blacks and grays that Windows GDI spits out.

recreating it as reader spreads. Always work in reader spreads unless there
is a specific design or manufacturing requirement not to. It really is *the
best* way to go. If Publisher has a setting to print as printer spreads then
it wouldn't be a problem because it would have already been designed in
reader spreads and proofed in printer spreads. That way when it's paginated
in your print providers imposition software it's all good for everyone.

a quick look at it. Just keep the email under 600MB. They take forever to
download...

None, no bleeds inside .5" margin all around and all grayscale.

What a mess last night. Acrobat 4 somehow is on my machine but doesn't
appear as a driver, so I got tired of messing with it and downloaded Acrobat
8 trial and all my output problems (so far) seemed fixed. I think the
problem was I never realized I was outputting to Writer because Distiller is
on vacation. And, my font problems are gone as well. Whew.

Looks like I will end up buying Acrobat 8...the student discount is terrific
btw.

I think I set it to High Quality or Printer,,,not Prepress.

I think I got it backwards up above.
I think I am in reader spreads and he wants it in printer spreads...sheesh I
dunno what end is up anymore. Been working on this stupid thing for 3
months....and worse yet; with a committee of wimmen (no offense Mary &
JoAnn) who still don't know the spacebar is not a layout tool, and insist on
using exclamation points at the end of every sentence!!! :-)

Not sure I have PostScript driver on this machine anymore.
I may take you up on that. The PDF is only 4 meg.

I may need help with Acrobat 8 getting the setting right, if you don't
mind...I'll bbl with questions on this.

I'm just waiting for 8 pix to be taken on Saturday night, then drop them in
and bring the final output to printer on Mon/Tues.

Doesn't much matter now...these folks have me so aggravated that after
working on this project for 3 months for free...I'm about to walk on the
whole damn thing. Give them back their shoebox full of crumpled business
cards that they called "camera ready" and go have a couple of stiff ones.
Warning: don't work with a committee of wimmen that call a JPG a JPIG !!
