Default Trouble with Desktop Icons on 2 monitors

I have an HP Pavilion laptop and an NEC Multisync LCD monitor. They've been
successfully partnered for several years now. Recently I used the laptop
solo and now after re-connecting them the desktop icons are split across both
the laptop screen (most of them) and the monitor (a few of them). I've tried
re-starting several times and the display troubleshooter to no avail. When I
un-hook the monitor and run just the laptop it's all there and looks normal.
Any suggestions?

I believe (I'm not certain) that Fn+F5 tells the display which screen to
use.

Your Display settings should have different settings for two screens, and
the Fn+F5 should toggle between the various options.

You can also Right Click on the Desktop, but not on an icon, and select
PropertiesSettings and you should see settings for different screens. I'm
gonna guess that you have the Screen 1 settings set wrong, and the display
_thinks_ that when multipls screens are present, the laptop screen displays
according to the larger Optional display.

You did not say if the external display is operating properly or not. It is
clear that the laptop's display works properly when it is the only display,
but does not display properly when there are multiple screens attached.

And if you simply drag the icon's to the required screen? - I'm assuming its
extended display
