Default Internal Link treated as an unfound external link

Hi,

On opening my workbook, I receive the message: "The workbook you opened
contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to
...."

I have one workbook with several worksheets (27 in total).
One worksheet serves as a summary of all the totals found in the other
worksheets of the same workbook. Each total is an internal link of the form
: 'sheet name'!CellXX

In the list of links from the Edit/Links menu, I can see 12 links of type
'worksheet' and status 'A' where all 'source files' reference the names of
12 of my worksheets.

I have looked for external links using the Findlink code from
http://www.bmsltd.ie/DLCount/DLCount...e=FindLink.zip (thanks to
Stephen Bullen and Nelson Carter) and also checked there was no VBA code in
any worksheet. -- no '*.xls' references found.

(my definition of external link is a link to another workbook or other
application.)

Oh God, I thought there was nothing else I could do and then I just found A
solution!!!!!

-- I clicked in one of the cells on my summary worksheet containing a
reference to one of the other worksheets and tried to edit the 'sheet name'
part of the link.
The strange thing is this: I simply placed the cursor on the 'sheet name'
text within the formula editing area at the top of the screen and pressed
enter -- the cell value changed from #REF to the actual value of the
referenced cell! I did not alter the spelling of the link, not even retyped
an existing character!?!

Well, perhaps, this might help someone.

As author of FINDLINK I would be interested to see the workbook if you still
have a copy which exhibits this behaviour. It is certainly not usual to see
"internal" links listed in Edit / Links.

I didn't make a copy of the file prior to finding my solution. Sorry.

On the other hand, I have now a new wierd problem after installing the

findlink code: whenever I open an Excel file, the file in which I had the

problem also opens.

What does the findlink code do? rather where is all the code situated so

that I can remove any traces of it?

The code does nothing unless you invoke it using Tools / Find Links
Then it looks in the active workbook for formulas that contain a string
that you specify.

it?

The code is situated in FINDLINK.XLA which is located wherever you chose to
put it.

Do you mean whenever you run Excel said file opens?

If so, I would suggest that you must have put a copy of it in your XLSTART
directory or in the directory you nominated in Tools / Options / General as
your Alternate Startup Directory. Or else you somehow installed your
workbook as an add-in using Tools / AddIns / Browse [if so you will see it
listed with a tick beside it in Tools / AddIns and you should remove the
tick]

Bill,
It was the Alternate Startup Directory.
humm, .. I am the culprit. I had changed the path of the Alternate
Startup Directory field.
thanks
