Deleting cropped regions or compressing TIFF images in PowerPoint 2007

When I insert a TIFF image into PowerPoint 2007 on Windows XP Pro SP2, I
cannot delete a cropped region or compress the image even though I was able
to do so in PowerPoint 2003. I have reproduced this on another computer, so
it doesn't seem to be a set up issue. I can delete the cropped regions
if I copy the image and then paste it as a PNG, but then I lose resolution,
which I cannot afford to do yet. Apart from reinstalling PowerPoint 2003,
is there anything else I can do to modify these TIFFs in 2007?

I'm able to crop a TIFF and then remove the cropped portion while compressing
the image here. Select the picture, choose the Picture Tools tab, Format tab,
Adjust group and pick Compress Picture. Choose the options to remove cropped
data and pick a compression level.

Other dodges:

Crop the TIFFs in some other program before inserting them into PPT (yeah, I
know, kinda obvious, but we gotta hit the obvious ones before we move to the
devious)

Crop the picture in PPT, rightclick, save as picture. Insert the newly saved
picture.

Use the paste special trick but before copying, enlarge the picture
considerably.
