Default "document not saved"

I am having trouble saving an excel document to an
external USB 2.0 hard drive. The temporary file stays in
the target directory but the fiel is not saved.
I have tried all the tips from the knowledge base but
none has worked.
If I use the external hard drive with my desktop, every
thing works fine...

When excel saves the file, it saves it as a temporary file with a funny name (8
characters--no extension).

If the save is successful, xl will delete the original and if that's successful,
xl will rename the funny named file to the original's name.

Common things that get blamed for interruptions to this process are antivirus
software poking its head in or network errors--either permissions or physical
problems.

But it's not recommended opening files from a removable media (like floppies).

I think I'd copy the file to my local harddrive, work on it there, save it there
and copy it back to the USB drive. (Copying done via windows explorer.)

(not pretty, but safer???)
