Default Storing ALL outlook 2007 data on driver other than C:

Hello All,

I have installed Office 2007 on my both the machines with XP pro and Vista
Home Premium. I know that by default all Outlook data is stored on C: Since I
use SystemRestore options in the OS, if I ever restore my system to the
previous point, I will lose all Outlook data after than point.

To avoid this issue, I plan to move ALL (I really mean ALL, emails,
contacts, Calendar, notes and whatever else that I am not yet aware of) away
from C: [I plan to make Outlook folder on another drive which I can backup
often]

Searching on the web didn't lead to any conclusive results.

Any suggestions for complete resolution of my question are gladly accepted.

Many thanks in advance.

System restore has no impact on data, it only resets system files, any data
is not a system file, so your assuption/premiss is incorrect
See win help for what system restore actuall does, or look on MS site

So unless your data backup application is flawed theres no point, since you
can include outlook data files in your current backup

Hy Teejay,

this site should be helpfull:

How to move the Outlook PST file to a new location:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/movepst.htm

All your emails, contacts, calandars etc. are stored in one file, normally
named as outlook.PST.

In fact, my understanding was exactly what you said that System restore only
restores system files. To make myself sure that my understanding is right, I
made a restore point and then installed few applications, copied some data on
the desktop, used computer for surfing for a day, installed firefox add-ons
etc. Then I used system restore option and everything was gone.
This hinted me that my understanding of system restore that it restores only
system files is wrong and it restores the whole drive. (I don't really know
if there is an option of just restoring OS, except the factory settings as
provided by the PC manufacturer)

As far as backup software is concerned, I use free version of Syncback and
there has been no problem with it whatsoever. I prefer to have distinct
backups as opposed to the whole drive backup. Hence, I prefer to have a
separate folder of all outlooks data (either single file or multiple files)
thats easy to backup.

Hello Oliver,

I will try to follow the link that you provided.
I am planning to import my GMail in Outlook as well (Repeated Gmail outage
are painful, I have been a victim twice so far) so I will use IMAP protocol,
Good that the link also has info on moving IMAP folders.

Thanks.

Still anybody has any other suggestions, its most welcome.

This is not correct. It does not restore the whole drive. It does, however,
restore the registry and system files so if you installed a program, evidence
in the registry that you installed it would be erased. Data in the volitile
portions of your Windows profile (C:\Documents and Settings\yourname) won't be
touched, hoewever, and that's where your Outlook data resides.
