Ian,
Save the pss to your hard drive, right click the file name in Windows
Explorer, choose rename, change extension from pps to ppt.
That's all there is to it.

either as Luc says (you will probably need to go to Windows explorer Tools
folder options view and untick "hide extensions for known file types"

first) OR right click New and then resave
