Default Abnormal bullet formatting in new documents

I'm not sure which group to post this to so if there's a better group then
please add let me know.

A few months ago I went through hell and back trying to format a document
with all kinds of variations of bullets and numbered lists, thus changing
the styles structure of my document. There must have been some 200
variations on bulleted and numbered list styles.

But that's not my issue.

Somehow, the hell seems to have made its way into my new documents as well,
although no new list styles are showing up in new documents. But if I go and
create a new document, and press the "bulleted list" toolbar button, it
starts me off with a hollow bullet instead of a solid bullet. Likewise, if I
create a new document and press the "numbered list" toolbar button, it
starts me off with "1." and then if I type something, press Enter, and then
press Tab, it gives me a bullet instead of "a."

I have scanned my computer for all instances of normal.dot and changed the
filenames to Normal.dot.BAK. I even checked the registry for obvious
settings and one setting referenced "email.dot", the filename I then changed
to "Email.dot.BAK".

"Normal.dot" does of course re-create itself in my profile directory
whenever I exit word, so I keep deleting it before testing new changes. But
I'm out of ideas. I am still seeing a hollow bullet when I start a bulleted
list in a new Word document in a new Word session.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Jon

Resolved.

After deleting (renaming) Normal.dot, and before re-starting Word (or else
deleting the new Normal.dot after closing Word), remove this registry
key/keyset (right-click the folder-looking icon and Delete):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\W ord

Then fire up Word and let the Windows Installer do its quick and dirty user
setup.

Another approach is to select each pane on the Bullets tab of Format |
Bullets and Numbering and click Reset. And nuking the entire Word Registry
key is overkill; there's a specific List Gallery Presets key that affects
this.

And nuking the entire Word Registry
key is overkill;

Not if I never needed any of my Word personalizations in the first place and
actually wanted a fresh start.

Besides, I didn't have time to take any more chances that a few "Reset"
buttons would suffice after all the hours I've wasted on this.
