Default Folder "not responding"

Cannot open word and excel documents when trying to under "My Documents"
keep getting the notice- this program is not responding. I can only open
docs going through through the main word or excel programs and searching for
the files that way. Same thing occurs opening files on email using outlook
express. Then the entire OE shuts down. I am using Office 2007, IE 8 This
is a new problem just began and each time I have to reboot and the problem
goes away for the first few tries then reverts to the no response situation.
sooooo frustrating.... any advice and assistance will be appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried anything other than rebooting, such as repairing your
installation by re-installing Office?

Thanks for responding. I have tried that and repaired Office but that did not
fix the problem. On opening documents anywhere else but directly through
either excel or word the system lags and it can take up to 5 minutes to open
a document....if I wait. Or I get the no response sign. It all started
after one of the automatic updates around Jan 18-26. I went back and deleted
those but that also did not help. I have reveiwed any and all posts here
related to similar problems and tried some of the recommendations but so far
nothing has helped. I am almost ready to play frisbee with the laptop...
well not quite yet

Since this also happens with Outlook Express, which is not part of
Office, it tends to indicate something else is wrong with the Windows
installation and your rights to access the drive location or perhaps
something physically wrong with the drive location. I'd suggest error
checking the drive in Windows Drive properties tools.

Bob, appreciate the suggestion and please excuse the ignorance, but could you
direct me to checking the drive as you suggested. I am using win xp pro sp3
if that helps. Thanks!

Click Start, Help and Support, look up Error checking, click the link
labeled: "Detecting and repairing disk errors", follow the instructions.

I, too, am having this same problem. Then when I get the document to finally
"load or even want to open " I get the message that the document has
previously caused errors. I do not yet understand what the answer to this
problem is through these posts. Please bear in mind that I am not very good
at computer lingo and really only use this program to type notes and minutes
for church and other committees.. so any explanation of help will have to be
sort of "dumbed down" for a user such as myself. Thank you.. I am becoming
scared that I will lose important information...
