Default Sending Email across home LAN

I'm trying to set up OE to send email across a peer to
peer, have post cast server on one host, my question is
what do I put in the POP 3 server when I set up email for
the clients? the host name of the PC with Post Cast or
IP address. Thanks

If it's a peer to peer network, why not just save the message (using
File/Save As) to a folder on your drive, and let the other user know it's
available and the folder where it is? Once they've copied it to their
machine, it can be easily dragged/dropped into a local mail folder in their
copy of Outlook Express if desired.

Or, if they are online at the same time, ask them to create a folder, and
push the saved eml file to their desired folder for reading at their
convenience. I don't really think you want to set up a mail server at this
point.

Actually this has to do with setting up a Scanner using
the scan to email function when a customer does not have
access to the internet and a smtp server, I'm trying to
set it up on a lan, the scanner requires smtp
authentication, i have been successful sending email to
the host with freeware smtp server software installed but
can't send from client to client, not a big deal just
experimenting right now, thanks for the help.

That is so klutzy. If there is an SMTP server running on one computer on the
LAN, then MSOE can access that server from any other computer on the LAN. No
need for the extra work of notifying the other user (how?) when they can
just poll the server.

You should be able to use either the NetBIOS name of the computer with the
Post Cast server, or the IP address. I use the computer name with Mercury
Mail. It would be essential to use the computer name if the LAN IP addresses
are assigned by DHCP. Don't worry about the Fully Qualified Domain Name
(FQDN) that your server may be telling you to use; if your computer is
named, "Jimmy", just use "Jimmy"; MSOE will be able to find "Jimmy" as long
the computer it is running on can ping "Jimmy".

You don't send email from client to client. Your server should have a POP3
store to hold email until the POP3 client accesses that store.

SMTP is a "store and forward" protocol; the mail is forwarded from the
submission client to the receiving client. It will be stored at any point in
between the clients, as necessary, until the MTA either succeeds, or fails,
in the attempt to forward the email.

If you have both the SMTP server, and POP3 client as part of the Post Cast
package, you should be able to send email between LAN connected computers.
There may be issues with the domain name to use in an email address; you
will probably need a domain name. If you make one up without registering it,
you also need to take steps that email doesn't leave your system with your
made up domain name.
