I have received two emails with attachments. One was a .pps file, the other
a .jpg file. I used to be able to click on the paperclip and it gave me an
option to either save or open atthachments of any kind. I have downloaded XP
SP2 and now when I click on the paperclick it comes up with C:\DOCUMENTS AND
SETTINGS\username\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMPORARY INTERNET
FILES\CONTENT.IE5\IJI...(cant read any more as it wont expand any further)
and underneath it, it says THIS FILE DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH
IT FOR PERFORMING THIS ACTION. CREATE AN ASSOCIATION IN THE FOLDER OPTIONS
CONTROL PANEL. Both of these type of files have associations saved on my
computer (ie .PPS files are always opened with Microsoft Office Powepoint
Viewer) so I dont understand whats going on! I can save the attachments to
my computer and then open them but I cant just open them without saving, but
other users on my computer can open them without having to save them!!!!
Please help!!!!!

Possibly you have a corrupted Temporary Internet Files (TIF). Each user has their own TIF
on the PC. The you try to open a file, it is saved in the TIF for the opening
application.

File associations are global and shared by all users on the PC.

Try clearing the TIF

Do you have trouble opening any other types of attachments, or is it just the PPS and JPG?

You mention having problems with 2 e-mails. Have you received other messages in the past
with the same attachment types and have problems?

Instead of viewing the message in the Preview Pane, double click it to open in its own
window. The attachment name will appear in a box in the header. Does the name look OK
there? If you double click it, what happens?

If you still have problems, do a File, Save As of the message to an EML file. Then have
another user logon to windows and double click the message to open. Do they have the same
problem with that message opening the attachment?

I have received PPS & JPG messages in the past and was able to open them,
but since I've downloaded SP2 I can no longer do so. I have tried
everything you've suggested and the problem is still there. If I save the
PPS email as an EML file and logon as another user and try to open them
still cant do so. I am unable to save the JPEF as an EML file. I can only
save it to the computer but am able to open it ok, If I double click the
emails and open them in their own window, its still does the same thing. Any
other suggestions please? Thanks for your help.

That doesn't necessarily mean that you should be able to open them.
Can you open the application and drag an attachment to it?
The .jpg file you may be able to drag to an IE window and thus
be able to see the full path and filename in its Address bar.

Please help!!!!!

Good luck

I have this same problem. Before sp2, I could click on a pps attachment in
the open oe window and the pps file would run with the viewer. Now I get
the "This file ----- control panel." directions. It does not work. Thanks
to this email I found that if I save the pps file then it opens fine. I can
click on a jpg attachment in an oe message and it opens fine. I want to
have it work with pps files like it did pre sp2.

I looked at 883260 again. The PowerPoint files are not listed and should
open. The problem is that AM does not detect the change in the file
association from PowerPoint to ppviewer. Since I do not have PowerPoint, it
will not open the file. The association with ppviewer.exe was made in
Folder Options/File Types when I installed ppviewer last year, pre sp2. It
works fine for a file saved to memory but not in the OE message. AM or
IAttachmenyExecute should be fixed.
