Default Trying to center doc copied & pasted in Word

Can only move first & last lines when I copy and paste. No matter where I
place the cursor on the blank page before I paste, the first and last lines
will generally center but the middle lines paste up against the left border.
I am only able to move them if I place the cursor in front of the second
letters in each of those lines.

I've tried changing the margins, indents, etc.

I'd very much appreciate any help.

Unless the text is a single paragraph, you have to select the entire block
of text before centering. Formatting applies only to selected text and any
that is typed following it.
