Default 2000 & 2003 Compatible?

I just bought a laptop with a trial version of Office 2003 although I have
been quite satified with the Office 2000 I have been using. Are the file
formats with the 2 versions compatible? If I don't want to keep the 2003
can I just install my 2000 over it? Anyone have any preferences?

Default 2000 & 2003 Compatible?

I've used Office 5, 95, 97, 2000, 2002 (sometimes called XP), and 2003.

Keep in mind that this is my opinion, and may not reflect a majority
opinion.

For the casual user of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, there is little to
recommend the current version over any earlier version. Power users of
those programs find that each new version has added or improved features
which may or may not justify spending $300 every other year to keep up with.

Access for 2000 / 2002 / 2003 is greatly improved over previous versions.

No longer my opinion:

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats are unchanged and fully transparent
among Office 2000 / 2002 / 2003. Any files you create using Office 2003
open without fuss in Office 2000.

From experience, I can tell you -- DO NOT install Office 2000 on a machine
that is running Office 2002 / 2003. Use Add/Remove software wizard in
Control Panel to completely remove Office 2003, then install Office 2000.

Assuming that I want to use 2000, would I be able to install over the 2003
trial or have to uninstall 1st?

I repeat: DO NOT install Office 2000 on a machine that is running Office
2002 / 2003. Use Add/Remove software wizard in Control Panel to completely
remove Office 2003, then install Office 2000.

If you INSIST on installing 2000 over 2003, here is what will happen:
The 2000 version of Office registration mugs the 2002/2003 version of
Office registration. Office 2002/2003 thinks it is not registered and, after
two or three warnings, neither version of Office will run. If you happen to
also be using Windows XP, the stop code for Office causes XP to stop during
the boot process.
