Shouldn't matter, but export to the new HDD.

Hadn't thought of that, but will the fact that the path to the files is

Thanks for the advice. All messages duly imported. Account settings
will have to follow!!

I can see the whole HDD. All system files the lot. It would really
help to at least be able to see what accounts were being picked up in
the original OE6. It was being used to pickup multiple email accounts.

Regards.
Bill.

What exactly *can* you see on this HDD? If only the files in Windows
Explorer, you will probably need to set up the accounts from scratch.

As far as your messages go:

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by
default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer,
you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control
Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools |
Folder Options | View.

The path to the message store will be very similar to this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{Long string of letters & numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

Copy the *ENTIRE* OE message store folder to a flash drive.
(Folders.dbx must be included). Place this on the Desktop or other
location. Open OE and: File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook
Express 6 and point to where you saved it.

Note: I am not sure if messages already on the new HDD will be
overwritten. To be safe, before you import, create new folders in OE
with a name that is not in the backup. Eg: Move all your messages out
of the Inbox so when you import the old Inbox, it won't over write
those messages. You can merge them later.

The motherboard on my old PC has blown but the HDD is ok and can be
hooked up to another PC. I would like to import all my OE6 mail and
accounts settings from the recovered HDD onto OE6 on the other PC.
Can anyone point me at a link that documents that process please.
All my searches so far (which I admit have been hasty) are pointing
at slightly different processes.
Thanks for any help.

Default Import all settings from recovered HDD

You can do a File | Load Hive in Regedit on the old NTUSER.DAT for that particular user and then get to the appropriate registry keys (see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx) and then export them and modify them in Notepad to match the current system and then merge those, which would give you the account parameters, but it won't give you the passwords back. You might be able to use PassSniff (search for something like that, its free, but I forget the URL and exact name) to retrieve the passwords.

See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4 and www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx

You cannot import the account information, as that is stored in the
registry, which is not easily accessible. So you need to search for *.dbx
(the files are hidden) on the old drive and then when you find the directory
of dbx files, then go to File | Import | Messages in OE and point to that
directory. That will get the messages back, but you will have to set up the
accounts anew.

As I indicated in the other NG, you can use Regedit's LOAD HIVE to load in the NTUSER.DAT file to get the account settings.

That won't work. The account settings are in the registry in OE and even if he could run OE on the other drive, it would still look in the current registry and not in the old one (unless he boots to the old one). He can use Load Hive in Regedit to load the registry from the user on the old computer (NTUSER.DAT) and then read the account settings that way, except for the passwords, unless he gets another program to read those (passnif or somesuch).

Thanks Steve, and for the other post. Had seen that method but am a bit
nervous about messing with the registry. Something about having to unload it
too!!
