Default #NAME?

Every time I call up a certain spreadsheet, all my values change to #NAME?.
My tools, add-ins are checked off and the only article I can find from
Microsoft is 291058.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;291058 The
resolutions do not solve the problem. Is there something I'm missing ? I'm
using Excel 2003, SP1 with the latest updates applied.

Hi there,

According to your description, I know that you receive #NAME when opening a
workbook in Excel 2003. Please feel free to let me know if I am off base.

Based on my experience and research, this issue could be caused by
different reasons. For example, the workbook was created in earlier Excel
version (e.g. Excel 2000) and the formulas or macros cannot be used in
Excel 2003. Or the data source the workbook queried does not exist on your
computer.

To narrow down this problem, please help us collect more information:

1. Which version was the workbook created in? Please contact the creator
of the workbook.

2. Does it work fine when opened in other Excel version?

3. What is included in the cells which show "#NAME"?

4. If possible, please send a copy of this workbook to:
, for test. This can help us find the root cause
of this problem.

Hi Paul,

I have received your email with the attachment.

When I open the file, the following message will prompt:

This workbook contains links to other data sources.
* If you update the links, Excel attempts to retrieve the latest data.
* If you don't update, Excel uses the previous information.

In the meantime, I also find some formulas are used in this workbook. For
example:
='C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Microsoft\
Excel\XLSTART\PERSONL.XLS'!ZeroKurve.ZeroKurve(B$2 ,E11,C$4:C$24)

Obviously, you have external data source linked to this workbook.

Based on my experience and research, this issue may cause if the linked
file is NOT existed in the proper location on your computer, or if the
workbook that you want to open has links to a closed workbook that is saved
in the HTML file format.

To resolve it, please perform the following steps:

1. Place these linked file in the proper locations on your computer and
then check if this issue reoccurs.

If the linked files are placed in the proper locations and the problem
persists, please go to next step:

2. To work around this issue, open the HTML file that the workbook is
linked to before you try to open the workbook that contains the links.

If you work around this issue by performing the second step, based on my
research, it is because Excel cannot update links from a workbook that is
saved in HTML file format if that workbook is closed. Excel updates the
links correctly only if the link source file is already opened. For more
information, please refer to the following article in Microsoft Knowledge
Base:

813977 Error Message: This Workbook Contains One or More Links That Cannot
Be

If there is anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Ada,

So I'm not exactly sure why this file opens fine in prior versions of Excel
and not Excel 2003 ? Is is because there are links to other worksheets that
these links need to be updated thus causing the failure to open? To me it
seems, the workaround is to use a prior version.

Thanks For Your Help

xl2002+ likes to recalculate any workbooks that were created in previous
versions. In earlier versions of excel, if you answer No to the update links
prompt, the existing values are kept. In xl2002+, you get those errors.

Jim Rech posted a registry tweak:
http://groups.google.com/groups?thre...GP11.phx .gbl

Maybe it'll work for you.

I'm not sure how this will work for UDFs. It works with simple links, though.

Hi Paul,

As I mentioned, this issue could be caused by different reasons. I cannot
entirely understand the situation on your side. To find the root cause of
this problem, please help us clarify the situation on your side.

1. Please first check if the linked files in the Excel workbook are located
in the proper folders. If the linked files are NOT located in the proper
folders, this problem will occur whichever Excel version is installed on
this computer.

2. If the linked files are located in the proper folders and this problem
persists, as it described in KB813977, this is because Excel 2003 cannot
update links from a workbook that is saved in HTML file format if that
workbook is closed. Excel updates the links correctly only if the link
source file is already opened. This is a confirmed problem in Excel 2003.
I am sorry for the inconvenience it has caused.
I think you need not to downgrade to earlier Excel version. You can open
the HTML file that the workbook is linked to before you try to open the
workbook that contains the links to work around this issue.

If there is anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.

Ada Pan
