Default Visio 2003 AND Windows Installer

I have loaded Office Pro 2003 and Visio Pro 2003. When I launch Visio it
always runs the Windows Installer first then starts up. All of the other
Office Apps are working fine.

Default Visio 2003 AND Windows Installer

It sounds as if Visio is trying to complete some post-install set up in the
registry that is not getting done, and so it keeps trying. Do you have any
spyware protection or anti-virus software running? You might try
temporarily disabling these, in case they are preventing the installer from
making updates in the registry.

Temporarily disable the anti-virus and spyware protection utilities.
Open the Control Panel / Installed programs - use the Change option to
launch a Repair of Visio.
After the repair completes, reboot - to ensure there are no existing
Installer actions running.
If you have programs which are loaded in Startup, close or disable them.
Launch Visio, Activate the program (on the Help menu), and close. (You may
see a notice that Activation is already complete, which is okay).
Make sure that Visio closes without any warnings or errors.
Launch Visio again to observe whether the Installer launches again.
(Remember to restart your spyware or virus protection software!)

If there are still problems on launch, check in the Application event log
for information about the Visio launch. If necessary, you can locate the
Installer logs in the %temp% folder, and review them for information about
what is failing during the launch actions.

Default Visio 2003 AND Windows Installer

Barb:

Thank you for you reply. I have performed all of the steps you outlined but
unfortunately it has not stopped the Windows installer from running every
time I launch Visio 2003 Pro. I even downloaded the trial version of Visio
2007 Pro and it does the same thing when lauched.

Default Visio 2003 AND Windows Installer

There is a KB article which covers locating and reviewing the Installer
Logs that are created both when a program is installed, and when the
installer is run to repair. You can find it on the web at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;826511. If you
find errors with specific error code numbers that are not mentioned in that
article, you can also try seeking more detailed steps or suggestions by
searching on those codes.

By the way - if you installed the Visio 2007 trial as a replacement for the
Visio 2003 full install, it might be a good idea to unload the 2007 Trial
first, then run a full repair on Visio 2003.

Also - do you run any versions of Office software which is older (such as
an older version of Access or Publisher) alongside your Office 2003 / Visio
2003 installs? Since there are shared components that might be involved,
it's possible that what you are seeing is normal behavior, with Visio
re-registering the components of Office to itself on launch.
