How do I get rid of .doc extensions?

I know that I can get rid of the "name" of the extension, but that advice did not work. The only question is ...you stated "under the advanced settings ... I did not find that group, but I did uncheck the "hide extension" as you recommended. Those suckers are still there! Any other suggestions? Thansk.
