Default Save As Outlook Template is missing. How to get it back.

I've always been able to create email templates by choosing save as type,
Outlook Template (*.oft). Now Outlook Template is no longer an option to
choose. The closest thing is a Document Template, which is not as good.

Does anyone know how I can get my .oft option back again? It used to be
available on my desktop (for 2 years) and I have the same problem with a
recent new install of Office 2003 on my Tablet.

Clueless.

Default Save As Outlook Template is missing. How to get it back.

Turn off Word as your email editor. (Tools | OPtions | Mail Format)
Create and save the template.
Turn WordMail back on.

Sue,
Thank you for the prompt response. Good tip. I created the template and I
can see that it is in the ...\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\*.oft
folder but when I go to Tools/Forms/Choose Form/User Templates in File System
it does not show up.
I closed Outlook and reopened but that did not load the file either.
Any clues?

Yes I did Sue...actually, I detailed what I did in an answer to the 1/17/2007
"How to create template" question...listed the full path given and steps.
Can you answer there?

No, it's not that easy to find another thread.

Do you see any .oft files at all in the Outlook dialog? What if you save it to a different folder?

Default Save As Outlook Template is missing. Thanks now new problem

Ok...here is what I wrote in the other email:
"Dear Sue,
Thanks for the help. It seemed to work great and saved the email as an .oft
However, being able to access the template is a problem.
I understand the directions for loading it to be:
Tools/Forms/Choose a Form/look in User Templates in File System
However, the template I created is not visible from there to open.
I explored to c/Docs & Settings/Admin/Application Data/Microsoft/Templates
and I can see the template, but it is listed under "Type" as a File, not an
..oft"
______________
I don't understand your question..."Do you see any .oft files in the Outlook
dialog?" What is Outlook dialog? I went into Choose a Form/Standard
Templates and can see the mail.oft ... is that what you mean.
As for saving to a different folder, I saved one in Forms, but again,
navigating to it through Choose a Form doesn't lead me to it there
either...but navigating the route I listed above to the Templates folder
shows it is there.
Thanks for trying to help.

Did you check to see what file extension the file has? If it's not .oft, it won't appear in the dialog. If you don't have Windows Explorer set to display file extensions, you should turn them on in the Tools | Folder Options dialog.

The Tools | Forms | Choose Form dialog, under User Templates in File System.

Shows it is there in what context? Windows Explorer? Again, check the file extension.

That's the problem. It has no extension. It is listed as a file. I did
save as Outlook Template and it is in the Templates folder but it is not an
..oft . Something else is happening.

So, why not rename it to somename.oft?
