Default Cannot open email links

I am trying to help a neighbor with an email problem.
She cannot open any email links that are presented in either an email or a web page.
She can open any web links, just not links to an email address.
She has Windows XP SP2 with full updates.

This is what I have done so far:

I ran the re-register command
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
I checked the file types
URL Hyper Text Transfer File Protocol
URL Hyper Text Transfer File Protocol with Privacy
and found
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
I checked the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and uses the
double quotes.
DDE was checked and in the boxes below it read:
#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)
#4
WWW_OpenURL

I also checked the URL mail to Protocol
and found
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe as the program
DDE was checked
application was "msimn"
type was "system"

I went to the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express
and found
C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL for the dll path (and msoe.dll is there)
just as suggested in MS KB Q306098

Anyone have any more suggestions or ideas?

Add that her email program seems to be working just fine.
Only that when she attempts to use a email address link, she get the message.
Your default email client is not properly installed (or something like that).

Default Cannot open email links

If you did this with no good results:

From:
http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

If nothing happens when you click a link:
Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to [NONE] URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol (NOT URL:Internet
Shortcut) and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome (Check the path to
iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

*****************************************

Do this next:

Try re-registering these dlls:

Start | Run | type, or Copy/Paste, these in one at a time and try again.
(Note the space in each command).

regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll

In IE, go to: ToolsInternet OptionsPrograms. Click: Reset Web Settings -
(uncheck box for homepage) - Click Yes.

Default Cannot open email links

The links to web sites work just fine.
Only links to email addresses fail with an error message.
"The default mail not properly setup" But we have no problems receiving and sending mail through
outlook express.

Thanks for the links again, the dougknox script did not fix the problem.
The MS article is the same one I found earlier and it does not fix the problem.

Try some diagnosis?

E.g. in a cmd window enter:

ftype | find /i "mail"

FWIW here is what I get when I do that:

example
F:\ftype | find /i "mail"
mailto="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
Microsoft Internet Mail Message="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
/example

Note that from there you could simulate what a mailto: URL causes,
e.g., in your Run... dialog and thus possibly get more clues about what
is wrong with yours. Hint: the %1 parameter includes the mailto: prefix.

If that's not relevant for your symptom it may if you were more explicit
about what you mean by "email links".
