"file" - "open" issue ... office no longer recognizes character st
Hi Folks ...
You know how you can "File", "Open" then in the dialog box where you can type in the file name, and as soon as Office (or is it Windows) recognizes part of the character string, it takes you to that file... Well I ran a "registry cleaner" (X-Clean) the other day, and stupid me, I must have chosen something to clean that I shouldn't have had chosen ... Now, Office doesn't recognize the character string once I begin typing in a file name. So to does Windows Explorer ... but somehow I lost that functionality in Office. It's really an inconvenience; nothing critical, but it's bugging me. I tried "Repair" but that didn't fix. I haven't tried reinstalling Office over the top of my existing files. Any ideas?? Other "autocomplete" functions in Windows do seem to work however. For example, in IE7, if I type in a URL in will recognize. Or |

"file" - "open" issue ... office no longer recognizes character st
Hi georgef,
There's this from one of Beth Melton's replies to someone: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ..... So that must mean it is controlled by another setting and it looks like it is this key in the Registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\C ommon\General And the String value: "Use AutoComplete" is what controls it. Make sure this key is set to a value "Yes". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have Word 2003 on my PC and autocomplete was working. I checked the registry and I didn't have a "Use AutoComplete" string value under the General key. I created one and set its value to "No" and the autocomplete stopped working. I set the value to "Yes" and the autocomplete started working again. I deleted the string value and autocomplete still worked. Oddly (I think) I had to create the value with a space after "Use". It seemed to be ignored if there was no space. Maybe you could check (or create) this value for your version of Word. The registry path will vary slightly according to the version. Word 97 = 8, Word 2000 = 9, Word 2002 = 10, Word 2003 = 11, Word 2007 = 12. Regards. Ed "georgef" wrote: Hi Folks ... I suggest you do Windows System Restore to time prior to running said
"registry cleaner", hopefully you won't have to do a repair install or worse. Also bin that piece of snake oil software. georgef wrote: thank you for your help; alas, this did not restore the functionality ... sigh.
