How do I get excel to paint the cells with say the 14
highest numbers i a defined area of the sheet?

Assuming your range (called "rng") is say, A1:A20, then
select the range, go to Format Conditional Formatting, Formula Is, and put: =SUM(--($A1=LARGE(rng,ROW(INDIRECT("1:14"))))) Press the "Format" button and format as desired.
