Linking To Excel
I have the same problem. All of the underlying Excel spreadsheets are
maintained by other people. If one them opens the file for editing, you're locked out. I also only need read-only as this particular database is for senior management who just wants to get some quick answers. My "solution" is I created a new folder to hold copies of the files. My friendly network administrator wrote a script to copy the original Excel files into this folder every night. My database is then pointed at the copies. Worst that happens is the data is a day old. This application is not mission critical to have the absolute latest data. I also supply two copies of the MDB. One is the MDB with the linked Excel files pointing to the network folder. The other is the MDBL version which has the links pointing to a C: folder. This way someone could copy the files in the network folder down to their C: drive and run locally. Much faster as well.
