how do i get Word footnotes to stay on the page they are cited...

I have an 18 page document with over 60 footnotes. For some reason, many of
the footnotes are not on the bottom of the correct page (ex: footnote 3 is
cited on page 1, but is written on page 2). I have tried playing with
widow/orphan control for both the main text and footnote text, and this has
not changed it. Also, one of my footnotes is 5 lines long, and the 5th line
is on the next page. The black line seperating the main text from the
footnotes is different on some pages as well, with some going across the
width of the text.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Re the black line...normally between text and notes there is a Footnote
Separator (short line). When a footnote runs onto the next page, Word
instead uses the Footnote Continuation Separator (all the way across the
page).

You can edit these Separators--in Normal View, click View Footnotes, and at
the top of the footnote pane, switch the dropdown menu to the separator you
want to edit.
