Default why does numbers automaticly turn to dates in Excel?

when I type in a cell example 10/30 and click on the next cell it turns the
first cell to oct30 and I don't want this

That's Excel being over helpful - or for other uses, very helpful
If you want 10/30 as text then type an apostrophe (single quote) before
10/30 OR format the cell as Text before typing
If you want to divide 10 by 30 then enter =10/30
If you want a fraction then type 0 10/30
