Default PST file has reached maximum size

When I try to empty my Deleted Items folder I get this message:

The file C:\mailbox-james.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce the
amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need, then
permanently (shift + del) delete them.

When I try to permanently delete the emails that I don't need it gives me
this message. So how do I go about permanently deleting the emails I don't
need or how do I change the Max size of the PST file. Thanks

Jeff

Default PST file has reached maximum size

Sorry, I've lost my original post and the reply from Tillman. My problem was
(I think, oversize pst file in Outlook XP (2002). I followed the advice,
downloaded the program to cut the file size (Pst2gb.exe), reduced the PST by
25 meg, and then ran the Scanpst.exe program on it, got results, then as
instructed clicked on repair. the program did create a backup file, but it
crashed (not responding). I tried to open the recov.pst file on which the
repair program was working in Outlook 2002, and it could not open it. What do
I do? I can't save anything, cant send mail, can't recieve mail. URGENT
PLEASE, I'm stuck and losing precious time!

Here is the text file from the repair program (first part -- i's huge)
