Recovering newsgroup .dbx's: DONE!
The mission has been accomplished. I wanted all those flagged messages back!
There were more than I realized. It appears the individual newsgroup files contain the flag information. Combining the tips provide here with what HAD NOT worked, here is what I did. 1. Removed and reinstalled OE; did not open program 2. Deleted the four OE registry keys 3. Merged the previously saved four registry keys Note 1: Since OE made a new identity in c:\windows\app..\id..\ I changed it as my data was saved under my previous identity. This of course also was what was in my saved registry keys. Note 2: I added nothing to the "new" identity folder at this point. Only the default files created by OE were present. 3. Opened OE and imported the Local Folder data from where it was saved. I have 9 folders under Local Folder that I created. These as well as the default titles were all retrieved properly 4. Although the information for my two news servers was in the registry (Internet Account Manager) they did not show in Accounts. So, I entered the information 5. Subscribed to all the newsgroups as before. 6. Highlighted/selected each group to allow it download the default number of headers. (I did not read any, but that may not matter.) 7. Closed OE. 8. Copied all my saved newsgroup files into the "new" identity file. (Actually I tried it with two first; no problem) NOTE: I DID NOT TOUCH THE FOLDERS.DBX FILE. I think erasing that could be a mistake. 9. All the flagged ones were there 10. Did much Catching Up Two things I learned1)If a message is worth flagging for a month or two put it somewhere else!;(2)There is no easy way to restore the newsgroups. I thanks those who responded so much. It really helped. Best regards, Wayne R. |
