Default Disappearing older emails?

Hi all,

I am using OE6 and I have noticed that some of my older
emails are dissappearing. Are they being backed up and
archived somewhere that I don't know about? How do
I get them back? I don't want the computer to do this if
this is what is happening.

thanks,
charles.....

If the folders are bloated, this can happen.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

Learn to cross-post.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossposting
http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/usenet/xpost.html

A point not made is that N multiposted copies will consume N times the
space for separate copies of the same post. Crossposted messages have
just *one* copy on the server and the groups simply have pointers back
to that same single copy. Multiposting wastes disk space on the server.
Yes, your post is small but remember that you consume N times the space
on one server and then do so on all the newsgroups servers worldwide.

Crossposting helps readers in one group see the replies from those in
another RELATED newsgroup to which you copied your post. That way, they
don't waste their time duplicating similar replies that already exist.

From my experience in "the old days" crossposting was
considered a no no.

Cross posting is seldom necessary and usually not appreciated very well. On
the other hand, multi-posting the same message to several newsgroups is even
less well tolerated.
