Assuming the templates and drawings are 'basic' shapes, they should be able
to be read by v2003 and v2007 and saved in the current formats. There were
changes between v5 and v2000 and again at v2002 which means that although you
should be able to read them in a current version, you cannot write back to
the old formats. You might consider using a trial version to read your files
and save them to new names (do not overwrite the old files).

Going backwards has always been a problem. You could only go back a version
or two.

Going forward is another matter and I have been able to open Visio 1
drawings in Visio 2007 with no problems. If there is a collection of Visio
drawings that need to be updated, the easiest solution is to create some VBA
code to open each drawing within a folder and then save the drawing in the
current Visio version in a new folder. That way you will preserve the old
and create a directory of the new.
