user friendly filterbyform

I am trying to create a "self-contained" form which
contains buttons for most major functions. I have been
trying to add a button which will run the filterbyform
function. I have made a button that runs a macro that that
will run the filter by form, however I cannot apply this
because any other buttons that I have made are ghosted
out. Is there a better way of doing this? Thanks a million.

Simplest approach is to use the toolbar buttons instead of buttons on the
form.

Filter-by-Form is less useful than it looks: can't handle any code/events,
can't filter related information in subforms, does not work in runtime
Access, is a bit daunting for novice users and slow for advanced users. You
may have outgrown it. What we do is place unbound boxes in the Form Header
section for those controls that regularly need filtering, along with command
buttons for Apply Filter and Remove Filter.
